Slangs & Idioms & Proverbs

あいちを打(u) つ

To throw in an appropriate word or sound of agreement during a conversation. When talking with someone, to show that you are engaged in the conversation, you may nod or say things like “That’s right” or “You don’t say!”. Examples of aizuchi in Japanese include 「はい」, 「うん」, 「へえ」, and 「なるほど」. This idiom comes from the rhythm between a blacksmith and his apprentice when they take turns hammering hot metal. The word “ai” means “together,” “tsuchi” means “hammer,” and “utsu” means “to hit.” Just as two people hammering hot metal need careful coordination, people in a conversation also need rhythm and responsiveness.

あけすけに 言 (i)う

To say something frankly, openly, and without reserve; bluntly. This idiom is used when someone speaks in a very direct manner and often carries a slightly negative implication, since “blunt” suggests a lack of tact. “Ake” means “to open,” and “suke” means “to be transparent.” Another, and probably the original, usage of “akesuke” refers to something opening up so that a gap is created and the other side becomes visible.

口(くち ) が 重(おも ) い

To be slow to speak; tongue-tied. This expression is used when someone speaks very little or is very quiet. The antonym of this expression is 口(くち)が軽(かる)い, which literally means “one’s mouth is light.” By contrast, this idiom literally means “one’s mouth is heavy.”

口(kuchi) を 割(wa) る

To confess; to spill the beans; to tell. This expression is very often used when getting someone to confess to a crime, but it can also be used for any kind of information, ideas, or secrets. A similar idiom (not included in this collection) is 口(くち)が軽(かる)い, meaning “one’s mouth is light,” that is, talkative or unable to keep secrets. Literally, this idiom means “to split the mouth in two.” To make someone spill the beans, the expression 口(くち)を割(わ)らせる is used, meaning “to draw out information” or “to get someone to confess something.

口(くち) がかたい

Tight-lipped; able to keep a secret; lips are sealed. If someone never carelessly discloses information, they can be said to have a “hard” mouth. The antonym of this expression is 口(くち)が軽(かる)い, meaning “one’s mouth is light.” Literally, this idiom means “the mouth is hard.” Because a tight or hard mouth is unlikely to open, secrets are kept safe.

ごますり

“sesame grinding” (ingratiating oneself, apple-polishing, overtly flattering, toadying, sucking up to one’s superiors) When a person makes an overily ingratiating remark, he or she is “grinding sesame seeds.” Others call attention to the gomasuri either by saying the word, by (nonverbally) making motions with the fist over the palm of the other hand (simulating the grinding of roasted sesame seeds with a pestle and mortar), or by doing both. Like the messy sesame seeds ground up in the mortor, the person seeking favor is sticking to everything (one).

花に嵐 hanani arashi

“Blossoms bring storms”  (Life often brings misfortune at the time of great happiness. ) This fatalistic insight is a shortened version of tsuki ni muragume, hana ni arashi, which is literally translated, “Clouds over the moon, storm over blossoms.”’ It often seems that misfortune looms behind even the happiest moments,

花よりだんご

“Sweets are preferred to flowers.” (The practical is preferred over the aesthetic.) Every spring on the day of “flower viewing,” Japanese traditionally travel to the countryside or visit parks to appreciate the beauty of nature. Yet human nature being what it is, people seem to show considerably more interest in the food than in the flowers.

芋[のこ]を洗(あう)よう

“like washing [a bucketful of] potatoes” (so crowded you can hardly turn around, jam-packed, mobbed with people) Summer weekends at the beach in Japan are impossible. The beaches are so crowded that you can hardly make space for your beach mat. When hordes of people play in the waist-deep ocean waters, wave after wave jostles them into each other. This commotion resembles a wooden bucketful of potatoes sloshing around while being washed by the agitator. Usage is restricted to water-related scenes.

言(い)わぬが花(はな)

“Not saying is the flower” (some things are better left unsaid; silence is golden). Since one can never truly “take back” what one says, there is great value in thinking things through before opening one’s mouth. Much harm and misunderstanding can result from ill-chosen words, which leads to the philosophical observation that “not saying is the flower.”

転がる石に苔むさず

“A rolling stone gathers no moss?” Staying at it pays off; patience is a virtue. For the Japanese, moss is something to be admired. Associated with beauty, moss grows on rocks and in the pathways of old temples in places like Kyoto. Yet the stone that continues to tumble will never have moss. So this expression is often used to admonish others to stay put, to continue on in the same job. Ironically, this expression is also used by some Japanese to mean the very opposite, i.e., the meaning understood by Americans: keep moving or you'll get old.
